How do dental braces work?

Whether you choose traditional or clear braces, all dental braces work to achieve the same result: gently and gradually move your teeth into their correct position and alignment.
With traditional dental braces, metal brackets are glued to each individual tooth and then a dental wire is threaded through each bracket. This wire is then tightened at regular intervals to slowly move the teeth into their correct positions.

With clear or invisible braces like Invisalign, custom-made, clear aligner trays are used to align your teeth. These aligner trays are not attached to the teeth like traditional dental braces and can be removed while eating and brushing.

 The process of straightening teeth

If you are interested in having your teeth straightened, here is what you can expect during the process:

  • You will meet with your orthodontist to assess the health and alignment of your teeth and recommend a dental straightening treatment that is right for you.
  • If you have crowding issues, you may need to visit your orthodontist for a tooth extraction before your braces can be fitted.
  • If you've chosen clear braces, your orthodontist will custom-make clear aligner trays for you before they're placed.
  • You will meet with your orthodontist for your first treatment session, during which your braces will be placed. Your orthodontist will explain how to maintain good oral health and hygiene during this session, show you how to brush and floss properly, and explain any discomfort you may experience during the first two days after placement.
  • You will return to your orthodontist for follow-up appointments at regular intervals to have your braces fitted or your last set of clear aligner trays fitted. The orthodontist will check the results of the treatment and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment at this time, if necessary.
  • Once the teeth straightening treatment is complete and your teeth are properly aligned, your dental braces will be removed. Your orthodontist may specify that you continue to wear a retainer for several months, or more permanently, to ensure that your teeth remain in their proper alignment long-term.

Treatment times and what to expect

Treatment times to straighten teeth can vary significantly between patients, depending on the severity of crowding, spacing, and bite issues, and the treatment option chosen. Because the jaw has finished growing and changing in adulthood, this can extend treatment time for some adult patients, simply because their teeth are more permanently set than someone's in adolescence.

Your own biology can also affect your teeth straightening treatment time, which means your teeth may naturally change alignment faster or slower than someone else's. Each person is different, and each patient's teeth may respond uniquely to treatment.

For most patients, teeth straightening can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Your orthodontist will be able to give you an accurate estimate of how long treatment will take, based on their experience treating patients with similar requirements.

 Why teeth straightening takes time

Although the idea of being able to magically straighten your teeth in one appointment may be appealing, the simple fact is that this process takes time. Since the orthodontist is moving the teeth – which are nestled in the jaw bone – into their correct alignment and position using gentle force (created by the braces), this has to be done gradually over time to protect teeth from damage and make the process as painless as possible.
